Duane F. Dipprey will become associate director of the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory on Jan. 1, 1991, Director Lew Allen has
announced.
Dipprey, currently assistant Laboratory director of JPL's
Office of Technology and Applications Programs, succeeds Clarence
R. "John" Gates, who will retire at that time.
Dipprey has been assistant Laboratory director of the Office
of Technology and Applications Programs since its inception in
1987, and its predecessor organization, the Office of Defense and
Civil Programs, from 1986-1987.
He joined JPL in 1953 as a senior development engineer in
propulsion systems.
Through the years, Dipprey worked on a variety of projects
to analyze and develop advanced concepts for liquid propulsion
systems. By 1964, he had been named manager of JPL's Liquid
Propulsion Section.
In subsequent years, he continued to serve as manager and
deputy manager of several other offices at JPL, including the
Research and Advanced Concepts Section, the Control and Energy
Conversion Division, and the Mechanical and Chemical Systems
Division.

A native of Minnesota, Dipprey, 61, was born in Minneapolis,
Minn., and earned his bachelor of science and master's of science
degrees in 1951 and 1953, respectively, from the University of
Minnesota Institute of Technology.
The newly named associate director received his Ph.D. in
engineering in 1961 from the California Institute of Technology.
Among his many professional awards and affiliations, Dipprey
was the recipient of the 1985 NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.
He is an associate fellow of the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), a Registered Professional
Engineer in the state of California, and a member of the honorary
society Sigma Xi.
Dipprey is married, with two adult children, and resides in
La Cañada-Flintridge, Calif.
